A recent study indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
