Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
